Rock
Rapids is the county seat of Lyon County, Iowa.

EmDlovment. Major sources of employment for persons in the Rock

Rapids area include professional services, retail trade, and

manufacturing. There were 1,213 persons, age 16 years and over. who

were employed in Rock Rapids during 1989 according to U.S. Census data.

Vages and salaries provided nearly $19 million in household income

during 1989 which was about 61 percent of the total reported income for

Rock Rapids in that year. The median household income was reported to

be $22,440.

GEOTECHICAL SETTING

This portion of the reconnaissance study for Rock Rapids, Iowa,

presents the results of the geotechnical evaluation of the Problem

Identification phase. The soils within the limits of the previously

proposed levees consist predominately of silty clay loams displaying

properties of low permeability except for some isolated layers of sand

and gravel. The silty clay loam soils are suitable for construction of

the proposed levees. The conclusions and presentations are based on

information from the Soil Survey of Lyon County, Iowa. released by the

USDA in February 1978. Soils information provided by the USDA generally

applies only to the top S-feet of the surficial soils. Deeper soils

information would have to be provided by exploratory borings. Existing

boring information was not available for this study.

The scope of this study was to perform a reconnaissance-level study
of the proposed levees along the banks of the Rock River in the following
locations.

o A levee is proposed to be constructed from near South Fifth

Avenue south to near South Seventh Avenue vest of the fairgrounds where

Davis soils are located.

8
