<br />A report to the Pueblo city ccuncil stated that 510 tlwelJings were
<br />wll~he.l away, 98 buildings wrecked, an,l 61 buihlings washed from
<br />their foundations.
<br />rhe loss of life in Pueblo Was heavy, owing to the swift rise of the
<br />river and the unwillingness of many people to heed the flood warn~
<br />ings.. . The official list places the number of bodies recovered at 78,
<br />but many bodies that were washed downstre'um were not rccovered.
<br />All t'omnllmication with, the outside world wus ('ut off,' as all tele-
<br />I!ruph and telephone wires were down. The day after the flood
<br />relief measureS were started by the city, assisted by local members
<br />of the National Guard and the American Legion. Near-by cities
<br />sent relief to the flood sufferers as soon as possible, but owing to
<br />the impassable condition of the railrouds and highways progress
<br />was slow. ~[otOl' trucks loaded with food. clothing, and medical

<br />The heavie~t loss was incurred by the railroad companies, as the
<br />flooded aren included nearly nil the extensive terminals of the roads
<br />that enter Pueblo (PI. II, .:1)" So great was the damage to railroad i
<br />property not only in Pueblo but in the surrounding territory that,
<br />not a relief train couM enter Pueblo for t.wo days. Of the six
<br />railroad bridges o,'er Arknnsas River and three over Fountain
<br />Creek, only one, the Santa Fe bridge to the Union Depot, escaped.
<br />All the others lost one or more spans 01' large portions of approaches.
