<br /> <br />1. Purpose. This report covers development of peak flows of the 10-, SO-, <br />100-, and SOO-year floods on the North Fork Gunnison, Gunnison, and Uncom- <br />pahgre Rivers. This information was requested by the Flood Plain ~mnage- <br />ment Section for use in making flood hazard information studies on the <br />Hotchkiss-Somerset, Delta, and Hontrose areas, Delta, Gunnison, and Hon- <br />trose Counties, Colorado. <br /> <br />2. The study area for this report comprises part <br />of the Gunnison River basin, which is in southwestern Colorado. Chart 1 is <br />a map of the basin. <br /> <br />The Gunnison River, the principal tributary to the Colorado River in <br />Colorado, drains about 8,020 square miles. Elevations range from about <br />4600 feet at the confluence of the Gunnison and Colorado Rivers at Grand <br />Junction to over 14,000 feet in the highest headwater regions. The <br />stream's principal tributaries are the Uncompahgre and North Fork Gunni- <br />son Rivers. <br /> <br />The main stern of the Gunnison River is formed by the confluence of the <br />Taylor and East Kivers at Almont.
