<br />Preface <br /> <br />The Interagency Committee on Dam Safety (ICODS) was organized for coordi- <br /> <br /> <br />nation of Federal interagency activities to ensure optimum use of resources <br /> <br /> <br />for the promotion of dam safety. At the present time ICODS membership <br /> <br />represents the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Department of Agri- <br /> <br />culture, Army Corps of Engineers, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, <br /> <br />Department of the Interior, International Boundary and Water Commission, <br /> <br />Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and Tennessee Valley Authority. <br /> <br />The Research Subcommittee of ICODS was organized in late 1980. The pri- <br /> <br /> <br />mary objectives of the Research Subcommittee have been to increase the <br /> <br /> <br />level of awareness of current research and to provide the initial step <br /> <br />in promoting more interagency communication and cooperation among <br /> <br />researchers. This report documents current research relative to dam <br /> <br />safety and identifies research needs for the future. <br /> <br />ICODS Research Subcommittee members during preparation of this report <br /> <br />were J. H. Coulson, Chairman, TVA; W. J. Alspach, National Bureau of <br /> <br />Standards; E. J. East, Army Corps of Engineers; E. T. Engman, Science and <br /> <br />Education Administration, Department of Agriculture; E. R. Lewandowski <br /> <br />and W. H. Rusk, Bureau of Reclamation; J. E. Strickland, Mine Safety <br /> <br />and Health Administration; B. A. Tschantz, Chairman of ICODS until <br /> <br />December 1980, University qf Tennessee; and K. H. Yang, Federal Energy <br /> <br />Regulatory Commission. <br /> <br />Survey of Dam Safety Research <br /> <br />A survey of current, proposed, and needed future research has been prepared <br /> <br />using information provided by ICODS members, the National Science Foundation, <br />
