Floods caused by overflow of the Little Thompson River were studied
in detail. The Little Thompson River is the only flooding source
for the Town of Milliken.

Those areas studied by detailed methods were chosen with consider-
ation given to all proposed construction and forecasted development
through 1982.

2.2 Community Description

The Town of Milliken is located in west-central Weld County, in
northeast Colorado. Milliken is approximately 10 miles southwest of
Greeley. It had a population of 702 in 1970 (Reference 1), and had
grown to an estimated population of 1100 in 1975 (Reference 2).
Milliken is surrounded by unincorporated areas of Weld County.

The flood plain in Milliken is mostly undeveloped or used for agri-
cultural purposes, although limited commercial development has
occurred. The Little Thompson River flows eastward past the north
side of Milliken. The upper portions of the river flow through the
Rocky Mountain National Park with channel slopes averaging 9 percent.
The lower portion flows through the flat eastern plains with an
average channel slope of 0.5 p~rcent. The mountain portions of the
basin are heavily forested, and the plains are sparsely covered with
prairie grass and .scattered areas of cropland.

The climate in Milliken is typical of the plains region east of the
Rocky Mountains. The mean annual temperature is 48.40F; the warmest
month is July, with an average of 73.30F, and the coldest month is
January, with an average of 24.soF. The average annual precipitation
at Milliken is 12.2 inches (Reference 3).

2.3 Principal Flood Problems

The main cause of floods along the Little Thompson River in Milliken
is cloudbursts which usually occur from May through August.

Documentation of historical floods and damage estimates in Milliken
is sparse. The Little Thompson River has caused flooding, but there
are no recorded discharges or damage estimates.

2.4 Flood Protection Measures

There are no flood protection structures existing or proposed which
would reduce the flood hazards in the Town of Milliken. Milliken
has not undertaken any flood plain management.

3.0 ENGINEERING METHODS

For flooding sources studied in detail in the community, standard hydro-
logic and hydraulic study methods were used to determine the flood
hazard data required for this study.
