STUDY AREA DESCRIPTION

The project study area is located in Section 34 ofT ownship 6 South, Range 66 West, Sections 1-4, 9-16
and 21-220fTownship 7 South, Range 66 West, and Sections 5-8 and 17-18 ofTownship 7 South, Range 65
West of the Sixth Principal Meridian, in the northeast part of Douglas County,

The total study watershed area is approximately 11,3 square miles, Four major drainageways, Kinney
Creek, North Pinery Creek, Fonder Draw, and South Pinery Creek are included within the study area, The four
major drainageways are tributaries of Cherry Creek. Although Cherry Creek runs through the study area, the
Cherry Creek main stem floodplain boundaries were not studied as part of this project.

The existing and projected land use within the study basin includes residential lots, golf courses, open
spaces, and commercial sites, Native grasses and some agricultural land currently cover the majority of
drainageways and open areas through the lower portion of the basin, The upper portion of the basin is rocky'
with black forest type pine trees native to Colorado, The topography of the site is separated into two distinct
regions, The lower portions of the basin are typical floodplain terrain associated with the Cherry Creek
drainageway with slopes generally of 1-2%, The upper portions are steeper and more western mountain like

with slopes generally from 2-7% with rolling hills and steep side banks. Wetlands are present along many of the
drainageways, particularly the lower reaches near Cherry Creek, The entire watershed is bisected by Parker
Road running north to south through the lower portion of the study area, east of Cherry Creek, Four roadways
encompass the site. Hilltop Road to the east, Bayou Gulch Road to the south, Crowfoot Valley Road to the
west and Stroh RO<;ld to the north,

Existing drainage facilities are scattered along the major channels and are limited to detention basins
controlling runoff from surrounding developments, roadway culverts and bridges, roadside ditches, and
residential stonn sewer outfalls,

II-I
