The flood swept down
through the canyon, a 14-foot wall of water,
crushing, grinding, sweeping away 150 homes in its
path, killing two people in Fort Collins and one near
Greeley.

It sounds like one of the more modern floods, but
this was the "Flood of Ought-4," as it would be called
later by the old timers who said it was the worst of all
floods. While the combination of rain and melting
mountain snow is bringing floods to the eastern
plains of Colorado today, it really isn't new. Floods
. are a major part of Colorado history, and some
areas in Greeley and Weld County have almost
become accustomed to rushing water.

Greeley historians Carol Rein Shwayder and Peggy
Ford of the Greeley Municipal Museums cited
several floods which struck Greeley and Weld
County:

1863 - On June 9, a flood down the Cache la Poudre
River in northern Colorado destroyed a camp of the
1 st Colorado Cavalry. The Cavalry officer ordered
the camp moved to higher ground. It was named
Camp Collins and later became the city of Fort
Collins. David Hodgson, a rancher near Platteville,
wrote at the end of 1863: "The year of '63 witnessed
the driest summer, the coldest winter, the worst flood
and the biggest grasshoppers that Colorado had
ever known."

1864 ' May 19, a wall of water pushed down Cherry
Creek in the new city of Denver during the night,
destroying City Hall and the Rocky Mountain News

http://www.greeleytrib.com/article.php?sid=2441

Nickname

.

Password

-

Don't have an
account yet?
