I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

22

Decatur Street crossing, has a first floor elevation of 5202.7

and is above the 100-year flood. The garage floor in the easterly
portion of the facility is at elevation 5195.7 and is expected
to be inundated during a lOO-year flood.

foot above the expected one hundred year flood, an extensive

flood hazard does exist at several buildings. These include

the structures along Colfax Avenue and Morrison Road, where

first floors will be inundated between one and two feet. Spe-

cific hazards exist for the steel plant of Mentor Corporation,

north of 16th Avenue on the South Platte River and the canning

plant of Ellis Food Corporation located south of 16th Avenue on

the South Platte River, where flooding in excess of two feet is

anticipated.

The Satellite Maintenance Facility diverts part of the flow

crossing over Decatur Street along the south side of the building;

before the flow reaches the South Platte River, it splits again,

with a portion flowing toward 13th Avenue. Along the north

bank of Lakewood Gulch in this reach, flow splits off to follow

Morrison Road to Colfax Avenue and Clay Street. Three-fourths

of the flow entering this intersection follows Clay Street to

the north and one fourth follows Colfax Avenue to the east

where it joins another portion of the flow which diverged from

the main channel in the vicinity of Canosa Court. The last

described flows join and follow Bryant Street to 16th Avenue

and join the flow coming down Clay Street.

Damage to cars parked in public parking lots and in the area

subject to flooding north of Lakewood Gulch must be expected.

Loss of life does not appear to be likely in the flood plain

itself because the depth of flow is generally two feet or less

and the velocity is anticipated to be less than four feet per

second in the flood plain.

At Clay Street and 16th Avenue, yet another flow split occurs,

with part of the flow proceeding east along 16th Avenue to the

South Platte River and part of the flow continuing north to

cross 17th Avenue. Flooding of the area north of Colfax Avenue

is predicted to be between one and two feet deep. While most

structures between Clay Street and Bryant Street are constructed

so that the first floor elevation is between one half and one
