The study area is within and near the Town of M.Jncos, Colorado, locdt edin
Montezu~~ County. M<'Incos is 10cated in southwestern Colorado, 30 miles west
of Dura"JO and 15 miles east of Cortez on U.S. 160, near Mesa Verde National
Park. A vicinity map is shown on Pl<'1te 1.

The Mancos River drains approximately 83 square miles within the northeast
part of Montezuma County at the downstream limit of the study, west of the
TOwn of Mancos. The headwaters of the Mancos River are located about 16mi1es
upstream of Highway 160, at r.ancos. The riYer flows ina southwesterly
direction to the San Juan River, a tributary of the Colorado Riyer. within
the,tudyarea, the drainage basin ranges in elevation from 13,00 o feet above
sea level at the headwaters to elevation 6,SGClatthe downstream study limits.
