<br />LESSONS of RECOVERY' A REViEW of TItE 1997 COLORAdo Flood Dis4STER <br /> <br />"NEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORS" <br /> <br />~-~~~---~-~--~~-=~~-~-~~~~ -~~ ,~~ <br /> <br />Local churches, civic organizations and businesses volunteered their time to help flood victims, neighbors <br />and strangers alike. For example, nearly 1,000 hours of time was donated by volunteers assisting with <br />reconstruction projects and general labor. Church Alive, local fast-food restaurants and community <br />groups supplied meals for flood victims at the American Red Cross shelter at Wally Post Gym, <br /> <br />Many public, private, volunteer and nonprofit organizations have contributed to the success of local recovery <br />efforts in Logan County. The groups cited below exemplify the community-based approach of "neighbors <br />helping neighbors" through extraordinary donations of time, skills, funds and other resources: <br /> <br />o Logan County (Board of County Commissioners, Sheriff's Department, Planning Department, Road and <br />Bridge, Social Services) <br /> <br />o City of Sterling (Mayor, City Manager, Sterling Police Department, Sterling Fire Department, City <br />Engineer, Community Development, Public Works, Streets Department) <br /> <br />o Volunteer Organizations (American Red Cross, Salvation Army) <br /> <br />o Churches and Charitable Organizations (Logan County Flood Recovery Task Force, Cooperating Ministry <br />of Logan County, Seventh Day Adventist Church, Church Alive) <br /> <br />o Educational Institutions (Northeastern Junior College, Sterling Schools) <br /> <br />o Housing Agencies and Authorities (Sterling Housing Authority, Northeast Colorado Housing, Inc.) <br /> <br />o Health and Medical Organizations (Northeast Colorado Health Department) <br /> <br />::I Business Assistance (Morgan Community College Small Business Development Center, Logan County <br />Revolving Loan Fund, Northeastern Colorado Revolving Loan Fund) <br /> <br />Colo.....do OfficE of EMERGENCY MAN4GEMENT <br /> <br />18 <br />
