'1/fO !f.t;lJ
$1t 61 ~1?
On July 6, 1983, Mr. Tim Maywalt of my staff met with Mr. Ron V4~
Schulz to discuss the County's participation in the National ~
Flood Insurance Program. Also present was Mr. Brian Hyde
representing the Colorado Water Conservation Board.

July 22, 1983

Dear Mr. Elliott:

Rio Grande County seems to be doing a good job of dealing
with flood-related issues under the National Flood Insurance
Program. The only problems that we identified involved the
County's recent update of its land development code and the
existence of a potentially hazardous facility on the south
fork of the Rio Grande.

We discussed with Mr. Schulz a few additions that need to be
made to the land development code and we'll be sending him
more specific guidance shortly. On South Fork, we found that
the Fun Valley Campground appears to be highly susceptible to
flash flooding, and apparently no warning and preparedness
plans exist for the facility. We will be working with
Mr. Schulz to identify steps that can be taken to address
this problem.

In addition, we are looking at different ways to provide the
County with more up-to-date maps of its flood hazard areas.
Some detailed flood data exist for the unincorporated areas
of the County outside of Monte Vista, Del Norte and around
South Fork. Since these are the likely focal points of
potential future development in the County, we may now have
in hand adequate information to prepare new, more
comprehensive flood maps.

I would like to thank you for making
help us. He has been providing
assistance and has been most

Mr. Schulz available to
us with top quality
with his time.

Olson, Chief
N tur 1 & Technological
ds Division

cc:
Brian Hyde
Pat Byrne
