<br />The National f'lood Insurance Program (NFIP) is a federal <br />government pro'lram that enable~ property owner to buy flood <br />insurance at reasonable cost. In return. communities are <br />cequired to implement floodplain management measures to protect <br />lives and new construction from future flooding. Flood <br />insurance may be purchasecl from any insurance a'lent provided <br />the community where the property is located i~ participating in <br />the program. The status Of participation in the NFIP for the <br />communities in the study reach is summarized in Table 9. <br /> <br />TABL~ 9. Status of Participation in the NFIP <br /> <br />Comml!nitv <br /> <br />There are two "layers" of coverage. the Emergency Phase and <br />the Regular Phase. Resiclents Of communitie~ participating in <br />the Emergency Phase may purchase up to $35.00 of flood <br />insurance coverage on each single family structure. Residents <br />of communities participating in the Regular Phase may purchase <br />up to an additional $150.000 of coverage, for a total of <br />$lB5.000 Of coverage on each single family structure. The insurance zones (A. AO. <br />and X, for example) are determined by the degree Of the <br />hazard. Table 10 provides some NFIP rate information. <br /> <br />TABLe 10.
