<br />Table 2. - Notification and warnings associated with Lawn Lake Dam <br />failure of July 15, 1982 <br />(based on 'interviews by one or both authors on July 19 and 20, 1982) <br /> <br />Location <br />(proceeding <br />downstream) <br /> <br />Warning <br /> <br />Cascade Cabins <br /> <br />Aspenglen Campground <br /> <br />Estes Park Powerplant <br />and two adj acent <br />residences <br />! <br />State Fish Hatchery <br /> <br />.' <br /> <br />Fawn Valley <br /> <br />Workshire Lodge <br /> <br />Homestead Condominiums <br /> <br />Ponderosa <br /> <br />Waterwheel <br /> <br />Fall River Motor Inn <br /> <br />National Park Service ranger notified owner at 6:45 a.m. <br /> <br />Ranger begins notifying campers in walk-in sites at <br />6:50 a.m. Ranger reports that walk~in campsites had <br />been notified by 7:13 a.m. At 7:23 a.m., recommen- <br />dation made that Aspenglen Campground be evacuated. <br />Rangers were unable to reach the campground due to <br />flooding of the campground access road. <br /> <br />Sheriff came shortly after 7 a.m., first person <br />notified, then warned the other residents. <br /> <br />Sheriff warned of flood between 6:55 and 7:05 a.m. <br />Wife of hatchery manager then tried to call Deer Crest <br />Motel where she worked, 'but no answer. <br /> <br />(1) Wife of news director at KSIR called night operator <br />at Fawn Valley; the radio station at that time had a <br />warning, but not evacuation. (2) Maintenance man <br />at Fawn Valley pic,ked up police bulletin on scanner. <br />(3) Sheriff came'by. <br /> <br />(1) ,Daughter call ed at 7 a.m., she had heard warni ng on <br />radio. (2) Sheriff came about 7:15 to 7:30 a.m. <br /> <br />Owner of one unit said that a resident of another unit <br />knocked on his door plus others. Do not know how <br />first person was notified. <br /> <br />Owner was driving to get hair cut at 7:15 or 7:20 a.m., <br />and met law enforcement vehicle; was told to go back <br />and listen to radio. <br /> <br />(1) Sheriff stopped about 7:30 a.m. He said to turn <br />radio on. Power then went off. (2) Friend called <br />saying the radio was calling for an evacuation (this <br />was about 8 a.m.). (3) Two other officials also <br />stopped to notify them of the dam failure. <br /> <br />(1) Sheriff came by at 7:20 a.m. and said to turn on <br />radio. (2) Police and sheriff came back to make sure <br />people were being evacuated. <br />
