Flood sidelights

Helping others

Stories of ways in which people
helped each other after the flood
sometimes surface In roundabout
ways.
The account of how Drs. Michael
and Dzintra Greenwald of Joliet, Ill.,
were assured that their two sons
were safe first appeared in the Joliet
Herald-News. The Rev. Harold
Westlund, who was pastor of the
Churcll of the Nazarene here for
seven years, sent the article to the
Coloradoan.

This is what happened:
The Greenwalds, who both
practlce medicine In Joliet, were
like many others In distant parts of
the country deeply concerned when
they learned of the flooding, because
their sons were at a summer camp
near Estes Park.

Since even people who lived near
the flooded areas were uncerta1n
exactly what places had been af.
fected, those who live In other parts
of the country and had relatives in
Cblorado were even more uncertain.
Many, like the Greenwald!, lacked
famlliar1.ty with the region. The
doctors tried to call the camp but
were unable to get through. ,
One of the doctors' medical clerks
is a member of the Joliet Nazarene
church and knew that Westlund
formeriy had lived in Fort Collins.
The clerk took the problem to the
pastor.
Westlund has remained in contact
with the Roy Halls of Fort Collins, so
he called them.
Arter consulting a map, the Halls
"felt quite sure the boys were safe,"
because the camp is near Estes
Park and above the flooded
area-but thought it best to see for
themselves.
Getting to the camp meant going
around "the back way," reaching
Estes Park from the south and east,
but they did get there eventually. At
the camp, which is about a mile and
a half from the town, they found that
it had been ra1n1ng, and telephone
communications were cut ofl, but
otherwise all was well.
Returning to Fort Collins, they
were able to Convey to the Green-
walds that their sons were safe.

.

Neal and Eric, 9 and 10, have
returned to Joliet.
Said Hall when contacted by the
Coloradoan, "It's no more than what
I hope somebody would do for me U I
was the one who didn't know what
was happening. I'm sure lots of
people helped out to get word to
people when this thing came up."

Concern shown

Here's a story that exemplifies the
kind of concern people were showing
one another after the flood:
(Eleanor Robb reported this one)
"After the ordeal in the canyon, a
woman from Kansas who had been
taken out by helicopter was
recuperating at Loveland High
School. "I'm so thlrsty," !Ihe
remarked to a woman sitting near
her,
With that, a boy in a leg brace got
up, limped over to retrieve a cup of
water, and brought it back to
present it to the woman.
Qne woman was heard losay, "We
went up the canyon Frtday to a
$65,00) property. We came back with
aflashllght."

Food stamps

More than 180 families received
tree food stamps at the Loveland
and Estes Park food stamp oft1ces
as a result of a federal waiver issued
through the Colorado Department of
Socla1 Services to aJd victims of the
Btg Thompson flood.
Ronald Mlltesell, direttor of food.
assistance programs for the
Colorado Department of Social
Services said the value of the stamps
was $S,m, all from federal sources.
Nonnally persons buy food stamps
based upon ver1fied Income and
resources. The walver ellm1nated
the verl!1eation process to help
disaster victims from August 6-12.
Mikesell said these households
would be subject to quality control
review in the routine investlgations
conducted by the department,
probably in the November or
December reviews.

.,
