LAND USE AND FLOOD DAMAGES
IN ARID AND SEMI-ARID AREAS

The 1992 ASFPM Arid West Flood Conference

The Association of state Floodplain Managers (ASFPM) is pleased to
announce "Land Use and Flood Damages in Arid and Semi-Arid Areas",
the 1992 Arid west Flood Conference.

This conference is co-sponsored by the three State Chapters of the
ASFPM:

The Arizona Floodplain Management Association;

The Floodplain Management Association of California; and

The Colorado Stormwater and Floodplain Managers Association.

The 1992 Arid West Flood Conference is the fifth biennial
conference sponsored or cosponsored by the ASFPM. Previous
conferences included an invitational works~op in Palm Springs, CA
in 1984; Arid West Flood Conferences in Las Vegas, NV in 1986 and
1988; and "Hydraulics/Hydrology of Arid Lands", sponsored by the
ASCE in San Diego, CA, in 1990.

The 1986 and 1988 conferences, after which this conference is
patterned, were well attended by community, state and federal
agencies which have a stake in western floodplain management, as
well as representatives from colleges and universities and
consultants. Attendance is expected to be between 150 and 200
floodplain management professionals. This attendance allows for
participation in the form of questions/answers and discussion among
the participants at both the general and the breakout sessions.

This conference announcement includes all information needed to
register for the conference and to register at the conference
hotel. The ASFPM and the cosponsors hope you will join us in a
discussion of the issues and the emerging answers peculiar to
reducing flood damages and protecting the environmental values of
the usually dry desert washes, the rare riparian areas, and the
alluvial fans of the western United States.

The Association of State Floodplain Managers is an organization of
professionals involved in floodplain management, flood hazard
mitigation, the National Flood Insurance Program, and flood
preparedness, warning and recovery. The group has become a
respected voice in floodplain management practice and policy in the
united States because it represents the flood hazard specialists of
local, state and federal government, the research community, the
insurance industry, and the fields of engineering, hydrologic
forecasting, emergency response, water resources, and others.
