<br />Tht, flood-prone areas havt' been delineated through use of readily lwailablf' informa-
<br />tion on past floods rather than from detailed field 8urvey~ and inspections. In gent'ral,
<br />the dt'lineated an'as Hre for natural conditions and do not take into consideration the pos.
<br />siblt> effects of existing or proposN! flood control structures except wht!re those e-ffects
<br />could be evaluated. Flood an'as have bee-n identified for: (1) urban areas where tht> up~
<br />stream drainal{f' basin excN'ds 25 square miles. (2) rural area:s in humid regions where the
<br />u[)!oltream drainagl-' basin exceeds 100 square mile!'>. (3) rural areas in semiarid regions whe-re
<br />the upstream drainagp basin eHeeds 2.50 square miles. and (4) smaller drainage basin.<;;.
<br />depending on topography and potential use of the flood plains.
<br />The K9th Congress. in House Document 4115. recommend€'d the preparation of flood.prone
<br />area maps to assi"t in minimizing flood IOHs('s by quickly identifying the areaA of potential
<br />Oood hazards. More detailed fl(Kld information may be required for other purposes !'lUch
<br />as structural designs, pconomie studif'::l. or formulation of land. UHf' rt:'E{ulations. Such de~
<br />tailed information may be ohtained from the U.S. Geological Survey, other Federal agencies.
