Orchard City has Surface Creek, Cedar Run. and Tongue Creek
tlo"ing through it. Orchard City had a floodplain study completed in 1981 for all of Surface
Creek and part of Cedar Run. but was determined by the eWCB to have inadequate mapping. In
addition. the eWCB determined that it was not necessary at this time to restudy Surface Creek
through Orchard City. Therefore, all of Tongue Creek and the pan of Cedar Run not previously
studied within the annexation of Orchard City were studied in this project. Figure 2, on page 8,
is a site map of the study area

A representation of the different river basins and their corresponding historical runoff amount in
Colorado is given in Figure 3 on page 9. Orchard City is located in the Gunnison River Basin.
The Gunnison River basin has a total area of over 8,000 square miles and is home to 79,300
people. There are 195 instream flow segments that total 1,219 miles of streams and 83 natural
lakes. The historical flood damage in this basin is estimated to total around $13.9 million to date.
A historical representation of the water conditions in the Gunnison River basin is represented
below in Figure I (CWC8. 2002)

s.t =-_ColInIiIlII!llIIlInClllloo!d_/Uws

aylh~
J_1991
Bum f\ool;I,

"",,'957 Soeclt1910
BHirtIoodl Bmlnloodl

,~
,..,
"_0
-

"" ... -

... There are flow records for this station for the
years 1958 through 1968 and from 1976 to 1987. Upon field investigation. it was discovered that
the gauging station had been removed. However, the 23 years of peak flow data was concluded

6
