Along with the flood waters being discharged into the streams, large
amounts of sediment and/or debris are carded to the streams.
Sediment erosion is dependent upon severa,l factors tncludingrainfall
inte1sity, ground cover, soil type, antecedent moisture and season. The
basin can be subdivided into four groups with respect to sediment production.
This subdivision in the order of severity is: the badlands; the non-
cuHivated uplands; the cultivated lands; and the urbanized areas., Sediment
in tile runoff minimizes bank erosion within the gulches and arroyos but also
incrl!:lses the damases at road crossings and on flooded plroperties.
Debris carried in the channels frequently jams at crossing structures
caus'ing overflow, erosion and sometimes structural fail Ul^e. The areas most
prOnl! to debris production are those with dense growths of sage, cedar and
juniper.

19
