When a 100 year event occurs, the peak runoffwill be approximately 430 cfs. Ifpeak
runoff values are over 18 cfs the Holita ditch will flood causing damage to homes and businesses
in the surrounding areas down slope from the Holita Ditch.
To accomplish the tasks that both the City ofWalsenburg and Colorado Water
Conservation Board required, we will present a summary report that contains information
concerning the history, the location, and the population ofWalsenburg. For this project, we
provide both precipitation and temperature records ofWalsenburg and some legal aspects, such
as: the private companies that own the ditch, the liablilty of these companies, the owner's
concerns and remarks concerning the Holita Ditch, the Federal and Local governments'
involvement, and laws regarding the responsibility of the ditch. Information on insurance aspects
are given, such as flooding information, causes of flooding, definitions of 10 and 100 year flood
events, zones, increases in flows, and the extent of the flooding. Storm drain information,
concerning history, the location entering the Holita Ditch, dimensions, and compositions are also
provided. Holita Ditch information is given to our clients, such as the dimensions before the ditch
goes underground, the location of the ditch underground, the dimensions at the drain intersection,
the continuing path and intersection at 1-25, the flowrate of the Holita Ditch, and the field work
concerning the ditch. Knowledge of the Holita Ditch soils are given, such as Ft Collins loam,
Glenburg sandy loam, Manzona loam, Noden sandy loam, Nunn loam. Drainage basin soils, such
as Louviers-Travessilla-Rock outcrop, Noden sandy loam 8-15%, Noden loam, Olney sandy
loam, Olney-Progresso sandy loam, Razor clay loam, Razor silty clay, Schamaber-Midway
complex, and Tranessilla-Kim complex, are included. The drainage basins, concerning drainage
runoff, roughness analysis, the south sloping aspect of the hill and the drainage areas are noted.
Information concerning hydrology, such as the definition of hydrology, the hydrologic cycle, the
basis of hydrology, the science of hydrologic studies and water, surface-water hydrology, stream
flow and Manning's equation, rainfall, infiltration, the Rational Method, the effect of surfaces on
rate of runoff, hydrology of an urban area, drainage systems in urban areas, uses and
characteristics of storm systems, engineering problems when dealing with urban hydrology, water
quality of urban runoff, and different alternatives for the control of urban runoff quantities, are
reported. All of this information is essential for the complete study of the Walsenburg project.
