This hydrology study was
done as part of the Larimer County Flood Insurance Study prepared
for the Federal Insurance Administration.

I

I
I
I
I
I
I

BASIN DESCRIPTION

Buckhorn Creek flows east and south through Larimer County ap-
proximately eight miles southwest of Fort Collins. Redstone Creek
flows south on the east side of the Buckhorn Creek basin. The
combined Buckhorn Creek-Redstone Creek drainage basin is bounded
on the south by the Big Thompson River basin, and on the north
and east by the Cache la poudre River basin.

I
I
I

The ~pper part of the Buckhorn Creek basin (above Redstone Creek)
~s approximately 8 miles wide, and the lower part is about 6
miles wide. The total length of the Buckhorn Creek basin is 28.5
\
miles, and the drainage area is 142.9 square miles. Basin slopes
range from 23 percent near the headwaters to 4 percent near the
confluence with the Big Thompson River, and the channel slope
averages 1.1 percent in the study reach.

I

The Redstone Creek basin has a fairly uniform width of approximately
3 miles. The basin has a length of 16 miles, and a drainage area
of 30.S square miles. Basin slopes range from 25 percent near the
headwaters to 13 percent near the confluence with Buckhorn Creek.
The channel slope averages 3.5 percent for the study area.

I
I
