<br />FLOOD INSURANCE STUDY <br /> <br />1.0 INTRODUCTION <br /> <br />1,1 Purpose of Study <br /> <br />The purpose of this Flood Insurance Study is to investigate the <br />existence and severity of flood hazards in the City of Canon City. <br />Fremont County, Colorado, and to aid in the administration of the <br />National Flood Insurance Act of 1968 and the Flood Di saster <br />Protection Act of 1973. Initial use of this information will be to <br />c('nvert Canon City to the regular program of flood insurance by the <br />Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Further use of thi s <br />information will be made by local and regional planners in their <br />efforts to promote sound land use and flood plain development. <br /> <br />In SOOle states or COI11llunities, flood plain management criteria 0r <br />regulations may exist that are more restricitve or comprehensive than <br />those in which these Federally-support.ed studies are based, These <br />criteria take precedence over the minimum Federal criteria for pur- <br />poses of regulating development in the flood plain, as set fort.h in <br />the Code of Federal Regulations at 24 CFR, 1910.I(d), In such cases, <br />however, it shall be understood that the state (or other jurisdic- <br />tional agency) shall be able to explain these requirements and cri- <br />teria. <br /> <br />1,2 Authority and Acknowledgments <br /> <br />The source of authority for t.his Flood <br />National Flood Insurance Act of 1968, as <br />Disaster Protect.ion Act of 1973. <br /> <br />Insurance <br />amended, <br /> <br />Study is the <br />and the Flood <br /> <br />The hydrologic and hydrau1 ic analyses for thi s study were performed <br />by Camp Dresser & McKee Inc. for t.he Federal Emergency Management <br />Agency. under Contract No. H-6867, This study was completed in May <br />1981, <br /> <br />1,3 Coordination <br /> <br />An initial coordination meeting was held on June 26. 1979, attended <br />by city and county official s and representatives of the Federal <br />Emergency Management Agency, the Colorado Water Conservation <br />Board (CWCB), acting as the State Coordination Agency and Camp <br />Dresser & McKee Inc., the study contractor. The purpose of this <br />meeting was to discuss the nature of the study, the scope and limits <br />of work, and flood information currently available concerning the <br />cOlrmuni ty, <br /> <br />A second coordination meeting was held on November 7, 1979, attended <br />by the City Engineer, two members of the Soil Conservation Service <br />and the study contractor. The city was informed by the study con- <br />tractor of their intentions and they sol icited infonnation on new <br />developments and existing flooding problems in the study area. <br />
