FIELD INVESTIGATIONS

Trips were taken by the Engineers to obtain information during the
course of the study. Tom Martinez, a maintenance supervisor and 28-
year employee of the City of A1amosa, took the Engineers on a tour of
the study area to point out: 1) existing problems; 2) past flood-
ing areas; and 3) specific locations where complaints had surfaced
as a result of local flooding.

In addition, other agencies with offices located in the city were con-
tacted for any pertinent information they could add to the data base
for the study area. The Rio Grande River Conservancy District pro-
vided the Engineers with ground-water levels at specific points, rep-
resenting several seasons. The State Division of Water Resources pro-
vided the Engineers with a copy of the Flood Insurance Study and hy-
draulic data used in that study.

The Engineers visited the Chamber of Commerce and other businesses
for books or literature that may have recorded historical flooding
problems in the area. The book "A1amosa", by Leland Feitz, was found
to contain information on flooding, but it was limited to the Rio
Grande River.

Interv)ews were held with individuals who are within the potential
flooding area. The owner of Haynies' Auto Parts Store expressed con-
cern of the existing storm sewer size, but brushed off the need for a
new system because he had been sand-bagging his front door when local
flooding conditions occurred. The manager of the Safeway store across
the street from Haynies' had only been in the business for a few years
and said he had experienced no flooding problems to date. The build-
ing, however, is higher and farther away from the street than Haynies'.

-lO-
