<br />The ~ational Flood Insurance Program is the result of federal
<br />legislation wMicM enables property owner, to buy flood insurance at govern-
<br />ment subsidized premiums. To be in compliance with the program, local
<br />;urisdictions ..ust zone the flcM plain and r~gulate future development
<br />in order to minimize damages. Under the program, little or no develop-
<br />ment is permitted in designated floodways. DevelopmP.nt is permitted in
<br />the flood fringe as long as structures are elevated above the lDO-year
<br />water surface elevation, or other acceptable flood-proofing measures
<br />are taken.
