,..--

.

.

ISLAND ACRES STATE RECREATION AREA

MAY/JUNE - 1984 FLOOD DAMAGE

Flood damage to Island Acres State Recreation Area located along the Colorado
Rivers approximately 20 miles east of Grand Junction, Colorado.

In May,.1984, the Colorado River rose -- peaked May 26, 1984 -- and flooded
approximately one third of the public use areas (see map and diagram attached)
portions of the enbankmen~.~ere eroded away and a huge amount of sand was de-
posited onto the group picnic area dna into the swimming/fishing lake. Approxi-
mately one-third of the lake is full of sand. Portions of the turf sprinkler
system was left stranded into the new river channel and all the turf areas are
covered with 1-6 feet of sand. The pump building(pumps, and electrical were
removed) is about half full of sand, the permanently situated tables were washed
into a tangle against a large cottonwood tree. Last year they suffered only
slight damage.

The following is B-Jisting of damage and cost estimates for repair:
!/' '-.~ .
Land removal - turf area $3,500.00.

Tables, repair

(boards. relocation, etc)

Sprinkler System (may! be a
total loss)

~500.00

$25,000.00 (estimate)

Toilets - no apparent damage
other than pumping vaults,
except damage to one vault

$1,500.00

Electrical Relocation

$500.00 . v/,~'
i"'-' w"'Y,~Y) r :

$25,000.00

~ !)<<l.cm

NOTE: Most hand clean up will be with the Restitution Program. Our most
pressing need is the excess sand removal from the group picnic area, plus
rehabilitation of the tables and relocation for use.

Lake sand remmval -- considered
unfeasible at this time
Contractor estimate is:

We expect to open the campground ares (weather permitting) by June 30th,
but the group use area can not be serviceable until considerable work is com-
pleted.

t,
