Flood Hazard Maps

Flood hazard mapping was a mitigation action mentioned in 1993, 1994 and
1995 and in the state Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan. Because the awareness
created by flood hazard maps was determined to assist in mitigating the
impacts of floods, the IHMT believed that the new system of local cost share for
generating flood maps may encourage communities to better plan and mitigate
hazards. In the future, localities will be more involved in providing base maps
and land contours, while FEMA will continue to provide the flood hazard
identification.

Recommended Action: Assure flood hazard maps have a timely and
consistent process to be updated to accommodate physical changes.

Lead Agency (ies): Federal Emergency Management Agency and
North Dakota State Water Commission.

Implementation Strategy: SWC will focus on the mapping and re-mapping
process in growth areas, Large and small-scale map revisions are ongoing.

Funding: FEMA's annual mapping program.

Time line for implementation: Ongoing.

11
