early ne~$p~per accounts, and authoritative information on the
St. Charles RIver study reach is generally lacking.
The following briaF paragraph, published in the
Pueblo Deily Chieftain of July 21, 1886, bect illustrates the
undeveloped nature of the area which has endured until recent
years' "The St. Charles Wee on a 'high' yesterday, running bMk.
full all afternoon. Whether any damage ~as done out there is
not kno~n. The Arkansas ~as also partly full, and even ths Foun_
tdn gave evidence of a slight intention to rise."
Long-term reeidents in the area almost invariably USa
the flood of June 4, 1921, as e yardstick against ~hich the known
floods of later years ere measured. Research confirms that the
1921 flood on the St. Charles River ~as of major magnitude, being
accompanied by simult~neous fluoding on the Arkansas River end
Fountsin Creek which attained disastrous proportions at Pueblo.
In the follo~ing excerpts from ne~spapar accounts, other floods of
apparent significance ere described as they occurred in 1946, 1950,
and 1955.
