<br />as noted in Figu.re, '11. The alarm could be mounted in a small <br />utility shelter Clr HlJt'fman box near the highvllY. An example of <br />how the alarm dialeJ~ could be housed is detaiiled in Figure 5. <br />Similar installations house traffic contro::' equipment, phone <br />and electrical clJnnect:ions, and are rather inconspicuous. The <br />alarm is operated by three Consolidated ~lectric Company <br />mercury-wetted float; switches positioned vE!rtically on a rod <br />within the vertic:al. ,culvert pipe. The pipe ,.cta as a stilling <br />well for the floats. The stilling well is det,liled in Figure <br />6. The alarm ta powered by one 6-volt~ 20-amp-hour <br />rechargeable batt:ery.. The alaI1ll has two inc.Qpendent channels, <br />providing a low Eita.gl~ and a high stage alaI1ll. The bottom float <br />activates the lOl/er alarm and the middle float opens the lower <br />alarm circuit allc'l/ing the upper float to activate the high <br />stage alarm as the ~mter continues to rise. <br /> <br />When the lClwe,r and upper floats are act.ivated, they close <br />the battery circuit:,. triggering the alarm, w~ich dials several <br />p:none numbers and plays prerecorded flood waming messages. A <br />staff gage is mounted near the stilling vell to provide a <br />visual reference of !!,tream stage during flooc.$. <br /> <br />4.2.3 Alarm Mess.agell. <br />The tape dialez' alarm can be programme,d to call certain <br />mllllbers and provide messages. The following is an example of a <br />typical series of me~!sages from the downstream alarm gage: <br /> <br />4.2.3.1 Lower Alarm <br />This is the South Platte River Flooc Warning System, <br />Sterling gage.Wate,r has reached the lowe:!: float. Note the <br />time. <br /> <br />4.2.3.2 Upper Alarm <br />This is the So~th Platte River Flood Warning System, <br />S1:erling gage. ''1ate:!:' has reached the upper float. Note the <br />time. <br /> <br />4..2.3.3 Use of Warni.n':J Messages <br />Using the times noted when the alarm messages are <br />received, the flc,od coordinator can determinH: the elapsed time <br />between alarms and ~~a.ble 3 to get an idea 'l.f how severe the <br />flood is. Using Table 4 the coordinator ~an estimate the <br />length of time until .the flood may arrive. As noted before, <br />until such time liS Illora experience is gained with the system, <br />the minimum amount c)f lead warning time that. should be relied <br />upon is 10 hours. This is less than th. amount of time <br />indicated in Table 4. <br /> <br />4.2.4 Communications <br />4.2.4.1 Suggested Flood Communications <br />During a flc1od:, t.h.ere will be a need to make and receive <br />calls.
