- 12 -

,

Pasture plantings will function primarily to increase infiltration
and control erosion, and proper use will assure improvement, protection,
and maintenance of grass stands, The construction of farm ponds will
assure more uniform grazing by reducing livestock concentrations that
destroy plant cover, Wildlife plantings, in addition to benefiting
wildlife, will accumulate snow in drifts and delay thawing, thus
permitting more water to percolate into the soil, In most caSes the
wildlife plantings will be made along stream channels and will have
beneficial channel stabilizing effects,

I,
f
.
~
Q

~
~

i
I
Iii

.

Land leveling, improved water application, and proper irrigation
water use are essential to the realization of maximum production on the
protected irrigated areas, Woodland management measures on private
forest and brush land includes plantings, disease and insect control,
selective cutting for stand improvement, and proper woodland grazing,
The quantities of measures to be installed and the estimated costs
are shown in Table 1,

Land Treatment Measures for Flood Prevention

i;
,
"

Fire protection measures are important elements of this proposed
project for watershed protection and flood prevention. The measures
most needed to control the spread, of fires are the provision and
proper distribution of equipment and facilities suitable and adequate
for the job, A system of surveillance for reporting fires has been
established by the State Forest Service in cooperation with law
enforcement agencies in local communities. Local volunteer fire
fighting units have also been organized in same areas,

(
i
~

The land treatment measures for fire protection proposed in this
plan provide for the purchase of additional equipment and storage
facilities to permit more uniform distribution and better fire protection
for the entire area (Table 1), Fire control equipment and facilities
to be acquired include one pumper truck, four pump units for installation
on available trucks, four back-pack pumps, and the completion of a
cinder block fire house at Parker, The equipment will be stationed
at Franktown, Larkspur, Parker, and Castle Rock, Colorado, and will
be operated by the organized ccrnmunity fire departments at these
locations,

I

t

Structural Measures for Flood Prevention

The plan proposes the installation of a system of 16 floodwater-
retarding structures, 8 combination floodwater-retarding and grade
stabilization structures, and one floodwater diversion structure
(Table 1), This system of structures is needed to provide an
acceptable degree of protection from floodwater, sediment, and erosion
dmnages throughout the watershed,
