- 6 -

r.'

Soils.- The soils are derived principally from the Dawson ~ld
Denver formations. A small amount of silty loess is also present.
Soils throughout the watershed are in general characterized by high
plasticity and 101; infiltration rates. The soils may be divided into
five main groups: sandy soils, moderatelY&IDcy and moderately heavy
soils, sandy and gravelly forest soils, rough broken lands, and
alluvial soils.

t,

l

The sandy soils make up approximately 10 per cent of the total
area. These soils have loamy sand or light sandy loam surface textures
and sandy loam subsoils with varying quantities of gravel throughout
the profile. They are generally over five feet in depth.

i
I

.

The moderately sandy and moderately heavy soils ma~e up
approximately 44 per cent of the area. Surface soils range from sandy
loa~ms to loams, and the subsoils range from sandy clay loarns to clays.
Structure is good and depth is usually over five feet. Similar
vegetation is found on both types. Production is usually higher on
those with sandier surface soils.

The rough broken lands and sandy or gravelly forest soils ma~e
up about 40 per cent of the total area. The soils are predominantly
shallow (less than two feet in de~th) lnth numerous rock outcrops.
The underlying material is fractured and often unconsolidated.
Ponderosa pine and shrubs (principally oak brush) are the characteristic
vegetation.

r~.
,
.
.

Alluvial lands make up about 6 per cent of the area and are
usually sandy on the surface. They are deep and ccmmonly support
wet meadow vegetation.

I

'.

I

f
"

Vegetation.- Tim major vegetative zones are found in the watershed
area. The southern half of the watershed supports a vegetative cover
characteristic of the lower mountain zone, while the northern half
has vegetation more typical of the foothills zone.

The most con~on range sites occurring in the southern part of
the ,mtershed (mountain zone) are i'lountain Grassland, Pine Grassland,
Mountain Slope (Browse), and Wet Meadow. Approximately 20 per cent of
the range area is in good condition, 60 per cent in fair condition,
and 20 per cent in poor condition. Predominant grasses are blue
grmua, mountain muhly, needlegrasses, junegrass, bluegrasses, and blue-
stens. Ponderosa ~ine occurs on the Pine Grassland site and occasionBlly
on the Hountain Slope site. Oal:brush is the principal browse species
common to the Mountain Slope and Pine Grassland sites.

L
,.....r;-' ~,
