<br />SPECIAL FLOOD HAZARD INFORMATION <br /> <br />Copies of this report can be obtained from the office of <br />the Otero County Engineer and Colorado Water Conservation Bo~rd in <br /> <br />LA JUNTA, COLORADO <br />ARKANSAS RIVER AND TRIBUTARIES <br /> <br />Denver. <br /> <br />!!!!:!;od.ucUon <br />This report wu prepared because a knowledge of flood haz. <br />arde and flood potential is important for land use planning. It <br />presents information on the flood hazards at and in the vicinity of <br />La Junta, ColoradO (see Plate A). The area stUdied is subject to <br />Cloodlng from the Arkansas River, King Arroyo, and Anderson Arroyo. <br />Historic floods have caused extensive damage to properties along these <br />streams. Although large floods have occurred in the past, this study <br />indicates tr~t even larger floods are possible. Properties presently <br />in flood hazard areas include residential, commercial, industrial, <br />and agricultural larid. <br />The report includes a brief history of flooding and identi- <br />fies those areas that ar<l subject to possible future floods. It pro- <br />vides a suitable basis for land use planning to guide flood plain <br />development and prevent future 109ses. It will also aid in the <br />development of flood ~ge r~uction methods such .. works to modify <br />flooding, flood proofing and other techniques which might be embodied <br />in An oV(lrall Flood Plain Management (FPM) program.
