The stage o~ elevation at which ove~flow of the <br />natural banks of a stream or body of water begins in the reach of <br />area in which the elevation is measured. <br /> <br />Low Steel or ijnde~clearance. The lowest point of a bridge or o~~er <br /> <br />the opening th~ough which wate~ flows. <br />Standa~d proiect Flood. The flood that may be expected from the <br />most seve~e combination of meteorological and hydrological con- <br />ditions that is considered reasonably characteristic of the geo- <br />graphical area in which the drainage basin is located, excluding <br />extremely rare combinations. Peak discha~ges for these floods <br />are generally about 40\ to 60\ of the probable maximum floods for <br />the same basin, Such floods, as used by the Corps of Engineers, <br />are intended as practicable expressions of the degree of protoc- <br />tion that should be sought in the design of flood control works. <br />25-year Flood. A flood having a four percent chance of being <br />equaled o~ ~xceeded in anyone year period at a designated location. <br />So-yed.rFlood. A flood having a two percent chance of beiJ\9' <br />equaled or exceeded in any cne YP.a~ period at a designated location. <br />lOa-year Flood. A flood having a one percent chance of being <br />equaled or exceeded in anyone year at a designated location. It <br />has an average frequency of ocCUrrence in the order of once in 100 <br />years, although the flood may occu~ in any year an~ po~sibly in <br />successive years.
