Loveland is 52 mi les north
of ' Denver in Larimer County. The Big Thompson River flows from west
to east through the south side of the city. The report was prepared
in response to a request from the City of Loveland through the
Colorado Water Conservation Board.
The basin and stream characteristics, flood histories
and probable effects of major flooding are described in this report.
Two potential floods, Intermediate Regional and Standard Project,
are used to represent two degrees of major flooding that may occur
in the future. These two floods are fully defined in the Glossary-
pages 18 and 19 - and should be given appropriate consideration in
planning for safety of developments in the flood plain.
The flood hazard areas defined by the two potential
floods are shown on the plates following the text of this report.
Flooded area maps show the approximate areas that would be inundated.
Flood profi lesl! show the depths of water relative to the streambed
and banks and flood elevations across the width of the val ley. The
cross sections indicate ground level across the val ley and the over-
lying flood depths.
Possible future improvements to control floods are not
a consideration of this report. Flood hazard information is provided
for the guidance of local officials in planning the use and regula-
tion of the flood plain and as public information. Awareness and
use of these data wil I help avoid the dangers and damages from future
f loads.

The information given in this report does not Imply

any Federal interest or authority to zone or regulate use of the

flood plains. The flood prof! les and flooded area data presented

are based on existing conditions of the drainage basin, stream and

va II ey at the time the report was prepared, and..are reasonab I e,

rather than precise, indications of probable occurrences. Urban-

ization of the drainage basin may increase runoff and flooding.

The use to whiCh flood plain Information will be put is the respon-

slbilityof local authorities.

i
f-

Technical assistance to Federal, State, and local agen-
cies for interpretation and use of the information contained in this
report wi I I, upon request, be provided by the Omaha District, Corps
of Engineers.
