I

I
I

19

add significantly to the flood flow in Wonderland channel. It was
assumed that the flood waters in Wonderland Lake would be released
gradually after the flood waters had subsided.

I

There will be a year-round, low flow in all of the proposed channels.
This low flow will probably increase as urbanization expands. Since
the inverts of some of the proposed channels are below the present
water table, the channels will act as a drain in some areas and lower
the surrounding groundwater table, This lowering of the groundwater
table wil J have a beneficial effect for the urbanizing area. Steps
have been taken for the City to claim this water for beneficial use.

I

I

I

Sediment that is produced in the foothills and carried down in Twomile
Canyon and Fourmile Canyon Creeks would settle out in the proposed
channels. This sediment must be collected at the canyon mouths in
sediment basins and mechanically removed. The day-to-day flow of the
creeks will produce relatively I ittle sediment. Most of the sediment
wil I come down out of the foothills during rainstorms. Sediment
producing storms are expected to occur several times a year.

I

I

The sediment collected in the basins can be used for construction pur-
poses in order to help pay for sediment removal operations, and to
attempt to convert this "resource out of place" to a resource of bene-
ficial use to the community. It is for this same reason that the
City has claimed the project developed water, which is in accordance
with the DRCOG Manual.

I

'I

I

From a hydrological standpoint, it is advantageous to couple water-
ways with greenbelts and open space. The uses are not only compatible
in the Boulder area, but create mutual benefits.

I

I

I

I

I

I

I
