Flood hazards and
flood damage will continue to increase
unless some preventive or corrective
actiOIl is taken.

Effective regulatory meaSures. suchas
flood plain zoning, subdivision regula-
tions, and bul1ding codes can be adopted
to prevent or minimize the increase in
flood damage. Flood proofing can pn-
vent future damage to exiating struc-
tures. FlOOd control works that would
modify flood patterna can also be a part
of a long-range aolution. The adoption
of flood plain regulations, which is be-
coming ~re and ~re acceptable as a
practical approach to reduction of fu-
ture flood damage, would not prevent the
highest and best use of flood prone
areas.

FutW'B flood heights, Hunwl'
CMek at Red Hozmtain Rnad.

~

ri,i,. folder ;"'S bee.. pret'""ed for thi' citi! of Aspen and Pitkin
,,""t~ Icy ~.~" U. 3. An IRF is a
haviog an average fre~uency of
rence in the order of once in 100 yea~a
although it may occur in any year, An
SPF is an e~tremely la~ge flood, but one
that can reasolUlbly be expected to occur
in the future. It would be a much
greater but conaiderablylessfrequent
flood than an IRF,but still could occur
in any particular year.

The purpose of FPI reports is to
abasi.a for managing the use of
prone lands in ouch away that
ha~ards and dlunage during future
are mintmized or eliminated.

~~,

ROARING FORK
RIVER and Castle
and Hunter Creel1

ASPEN,
COLORADC

JUNE 1973

:i:-i':'Si:'&,g...../~ .",,,
8jFl<~~,?':~ht/!:.MCautZ~}
_~~u.;<.., ~.l....,_."",. ___->-__~__
