G. Rockwell
District Engineer
Sacramento District, Corps of Engineers
650 Capitol Mall
Sacramento, California 95814

Dear Colonel Rockwell:

Our office has received requests from the t~Nn of Marble and Gunnison
County Commissioners for a flood study for Marble.

Marble is located at the base of Elk Mountain at an elevation of
8,000 feet. Carbonate Creek flows from the mountain through the town to
the Crystal River. Carbonate Creek has a channel slope of approximately
20% as it enters the town. Several floods from Carbonate Creek carrying
varying amounts of mud and rock have been experienced. During a flood in
the 1940's a new course was established in which the creek now flows.

Due to the high velocity of flood flows, it appears structural meas-
ures provides a logical solution to Marbel's flood problems. We would
like to explore the possibility of the Corps of Engineers preparing a
feasibility study for a flood control project which would qualify for
federal participation.

I will be in the Marble area on November 26 and 27 and would appreci-
ate the opportunity to review their flood hazard with Corps of Engineers
personnel at that time.

Very truly yours,

-:; ", / ~ ~~
,/ ~--/,(/~'/?-;/--/- .
! -' 1___'" """'-<;.- ,., ~ .
Donald E.
