e

.

Glossary

Abrasion . Removal of strearnbank material due 10 entrained sediment, ice, or debris
rubbing against the bank.

Accretion. The natural building up of streambank by the river depositing sediment,

Aggradation (bed) - A progressive buildup or raising of the channel bed, flood plane, or
other surface due 10 sediment deposition. Aggradation is an indicator that a
change in the stream's discharge or sediment load characteristics is taking
place.

Angle of repose - The maximum angle (as measured from the horizontal) at which loose
materials can rest with stability.

Annual series - The discharge record composed of the greatest discharge each year
during the period of record.

Annor - A coarse layer of gravel or cobble that develops on a streambed through
winnowing away of fines.

Annoring . (a) Natural process whereby an erosion-resistant layer of relatively large
particles is fonned on a strearnbank due to the removal of finer particles by
streamflow. (b) Placement of a covering on a streambank or filter 10 prevent
erosion.

Articulated concrete mattress - Rigid concrete slabs usually hinged together with
corrosion.resistant wire fasteners; primarily placed for lower bank
protection.

Colorado Erosion Control Manual

XIII
