Methods For Controlling Erosion

e

completely "locked in". TIleS are also used to consb1Jct bulkheads. with or without
vegetatioll.

Toe mats. shown in Figure 4 - 9. do not provide much in the way of environmental
enhancement They are not aesthetically pleasing. However. once sediment has
accumulaed in the tires and vegetation is established the bank may have a naturaI
appearame. Wildlife access is often improved because the previously eroding bank is
flattened. Because tires are a readily-available. low-cost material. sb1Jctures utilizing
tires have been widely used. Most failures of this sb1Jcture type are related to poor
anchorinB. TIleS should have holes drilled into the sidewalls so that trapped air can
escape. Tile costs of tire mats varies greatly due to the fact that construction is very
labor intellsive. Material casts range from 10-40 dollars per linear foot.

FIGURE 4. 9

TIre mat

Varies

Flow _
lires Under Stone Backfill (not shown)
Strand Anchor

Streambed

."
Iii
t>
'"

Broken Concrete
Streambed
NW.S.

Existing
BankJine

r Soil Layer

Willows

Stone ~ 8
arias
J.. w
Varies - 'Ii
>

IVon4H
Random Fill
Anchor
Anchor

Tree and Brush Revettnents - This type of streambank erosion protection utilizes larger.
locally available trees or brush cuttings placed along the eroding bank.
