e

TIed in - An expression used to indicate that a revetment or dike is constructed to
prevent or minimize streamOow between the structure and the bank.

TImber or brush matb'ess - A revetment made or brush, poles, logs or lumber
interwoven or otherwise lashed together. The completed matb'ess is then
placed on the bank of a stream and weighted with ballast or cabled into bank.

Toe - That portion of a stream cross section where the lower bank tenninates and the
channel bottom or the opposite lower bank begins.

Top bank - The break in slope between the bank and the surrounding temin.

Trench-Ii: I revetment - Stone. concrete, or masonry material placed in a b'ench dug
behind and para1lelto an eroding streambank. When the erosive action of the
stream reaches the b'ench, the material placed in the b'ench anoors the bank
and thus retards further erosion.

Thrbidily - Reduction in transparency caused by suspended solids or colloidal liquid
droplets.

Turbulence - Motion of Ouids in which local velocities and pressures Ouctuate
irregularly in a random manner.

Unravel - To lose material from the edges of a revetmenL

Upper balk - The portion of a streambank having all elevation greater than the mean
level of the stream.

Vane dike s - Structures designed to direct streamOow away from an eroding bank line,
but pennitting limited amount of both water and sediment to pass landward
of the structure.

Vegetatioll - Woody or nonwoody plants used to stabilize a streambank and retard
erosion.

Velocity lof water in a stream) - The speed that water travels in a given direction;
expressed as a distance traveled during an interval of time.

Water control structure - A device, such as a weir or gated structure. used primarily to
control water level.

Watershed - See drainage basin.

Wave attack - Impact of waves on a streambank.

Weatherir,g - Physical disintegration or chemical decomposition of rock due to wind,
rain, heat, freezing, thawing, etc.

Weephole - Opening left in a revetment or bulkhead to allow groundwater drainage.

e

XXIV

Colorad,) Erosion Control Manual
