<br />e <br /> <br />e <br /> <br />Perennial stream - A channellbat has continuous Ilow. <br /> <br />Pile - An elongated member, usually made of timber, concrete, or steel, Ibat serves as a <br />structural component of a river-ttaining structure. <br /> <br />Piping - The action of water passing through or WIder a bank and cmrying wilb it to Ibe <br />surface at Ibe downstream toe some of Ibe finer material.. <br /> <br />Point bar - A crescent shaped bar of coarse sediment built out from Ibe convex bank of a <br />meander. <br /> <br />Pool - A topographically low area produced by scour and generally containing fine- <br />grained sediments. Pools are usually associated wilb point bars in <br />meandering streams. <br /> <br />Propagule - Seed, cutting, tuber, bulb, rtlizome, or other vegetative component used to <br />propagate plants. <br /> <br />Quarry-run stone - Natural material used for streambank protection as received from a <br />quarry without regard to gradation requirements. <br /> <br />Rapid drawdown - Lowering the water against a bank more quickly than the bank can <br />drain, which can leave Ibe bank in an Wlstable condition. <br /> <br />Reach - A portion of a channel between an upstream and downstream point <br /> <br />Recurrence (return) interval - The frequency wilb which a given dischllll!e can be <br />expected. <br /> <br />Refusal - Erosion-resistant material placed in a ttench (excavated tandward) at Ibe <br />upstream end of a revetment to preventllanking. <br /> <br />Retard - Structure placed para1Iel to a streambank to prevent erosive currents from <br />attacking the bank. <br /> <br />Revetment - Cover of erosion-resistant material placed to protect a streambank. <br /> <br />Riffle - Shallow rapids in an open stream, where Ibe water surface is broken into waves. <br /> <br />Rill erosion - Removal of soil particles from a surface by surface runoff moving through <br />relatively small channels. <br /> <br />Riparian - Pertaining to anything connected wilb or adjacent to Ibe banks of a stream. <br /> <br />Riparian vegetation - Vegetation within and along Ibe banks of a watercourse. <br /> <br />Riprap - Stone or boulders that are placed on streambanks to protect Ibe bank from <br />erosive waves or currents.. <br /> <br />Colorado Erosion Control Manual <br /> <br />XXI <br />
