<br />PRE FACE <br /> <br />The primary purpose of the series, "Techniques of Water Resources <br />Investigations. II is to provide members of t~e Water Resources Division <br />with information on procedures that will assist and guide them in planning <br />and executing specialized work. As techniques change from time to time. <br />final publication will be by books and chapters to permit ready revision <br />when appropriate. This manual is a preliminary version of one of the <br />chapters. Instructions contained in the manual are considered provi- <br />sional and subject to revision because of experience in use or because <br />of advancement in knowledge, techniques. or equipment. <br /> <br />Judgment must be used in deciding how closely to adhere to ins true - <br />tions. Instructions which include information on prep;iration of data for <br />use in a computer program must be closely followed. Instructions on <br />methods of analysis are generally less binding and are not to be utilized <br />to the extent of inhibiting initiative or stifling progressive development. <br />However. before using a technique which differs substantially from one <br />which has been recommended. it should be discussed with the office of <br />the appropriate Branch Chief. <br /> <br />When the final edition of this manual is issued. publication will be <br />announced in "New Publications of the Geological Survey" and the report <br />will be for sale by the Superintendent of Documents. <br /> <br />Hi <br />
