1.3 Coordination

AS a result of correspondence between the Regional Office of FEMA.
the Colorado Water Conservation Board, and the Town of Ridgway, it
was requested that a Flood Insurance Study be prepared for Ridgway.

2.0 AREA STUDIED

2.1 Scope of Study

This Flood Insurance Study covers the incorporated areas of the
Town of Ridgway, Ouray County, Colorado. The area of study is
shown on the Vicinity Map (Figure 1).

The areas studied by detailed methods were selected based on the
extent and validity of available hydrologic and hydraulic data.

Uncompahgre River was studied in detail for the lower limit at the
County Road Bridge, 1.8 miles downstream from the Town of Ridgway
which coincides with the southern edge upstream of the proposed
Ridgway storage reservoir of the Dallas Creek project.

Approximate analyses were used to study those areas having a low
development potential or minimal flood hazards.

2.2 Community Description

Ridgway is located in west-central Ouray County, in southwestern
Colorado and is bordered by unincorporated areas of Ouray County.
Ridgway lies in a broad valley at the intersectlons of U.S. Highway
550 and State Highway 62. Ridgway is 91 miles from Gunnison, 85
miles from Grand Junction, 80 miles from Durango, and 108 miles
from Cortez. The town itself encompasses approximately 480 acres.

The U.S. Bureau of the Census indicates that the population of
Ridgway in 1980 was 369 (Reference 2) with a growth increase every

year.

Uncompahgre River is located in southwestern Colorado approximately
70 miles east of the western boundary of Colorado. The headwaters
rise on the northern slopes of the San Juan Mountains west of the
Continental Divide at elevations higher than 13,000 feet. The
river then flows northwesterly through Ouray, Montrose, and Delta
Counties for approximately 70 miles to its confluence with the
Gunnison River near the City of Delta. Uncompahgre River drains
approximately 1,100 square miles at its confluence with the Gunnison
River and contributes an annual average of approximately 200,000
acre-feet of water to the Gunnison River.

The climate is characterized as semiarid, but rainfall and temper-
ature vary widely. Average annual precipitation ranges from

2
