RECOHNEl.','DATIO:<S Al:W CONCLUSIONS

.

The method used in this study is inexpensive and fast. It

.

could be used to map flood potential in large areas before urban

and sub-urbanization make land use planning irrelevant. In the

author's opinion, the simplicity of the method and the clarity

of the maps enhance its value J:O land use planning,.

The method proposed here permits the delineation of areas

susceptible to flooding with a fair amount of certainty, With a

minimum amount of hydrologic information it is >>oss~ble to ~ake

estimations of magnitude ;1nd frequency of flooding, In the eight

quadrangle Windsor area, areas of past flooding have been mapped

,and flood magnitudes and frequencies evaluated with the hope that

the information will be 'applied to sensible land use planning.

The method does have some important restrictions. It is

probab}y not applicable to humid climates where dense vegetation

'would obscure all flood evidence. The calculations of'discharge

are not 'meant for flood design" They can only give an estimate

of magnitude and frequency of flooding,

The areas mapped are not the only place liable to flooding.

Sites adjacent to susceptible areas may floo~ less frequently,

Nodifications of a basin may produce floods of a magnitude and
2
extent never before experienced in that particular drainage,

.

2The change in rational equation runoff coefficients shows the
important effects of land use change. For example'; a change from"
grass on flat land (C=O.lO) to parkin&area (C=O,9) suggests an in-
crease in discharge by a factor of 9, The change from flat land >lith
prairie soil, cultivated but without crops (C=O,35) to single family
residential use (C=O.50) may increase the flood discharge by a factor
of 1.4.
