iii

Walsh, James Paul Jr. (M.S., Geology)

Drainage Basins and Areas of Past Flooding in the Windsor Area,

Colorado

Thesis directed by Associate Professor T. Nelson Caine

Eight quadrangle maps showing drainage basins end areas of

past flooding are presented for the Windsor area of Colorado: These

maps can be used to define, areas of surface ,water collection. Basin

patameters such as size, shape and slope influence flooding, Areas

that have flooded in the past can be expected to, flood in the future.

Drainage basin boundari~s ,were mapped on the basis of topo-

graphy, using air photos and topographic"maps, The extent of past

floods was mapped from airphoto, evidence, supplemented by h'istoric

~

~;

and eyewitness reports and maps of surficia~ geology, soils and

topography,

Historic st,ream records on "he Big Thompson" Ca,che la Poui:lre

and South Platte Rivers indicate major floods have occurred several

times in a lifetime, Eye witness. reports on the creeks indicate

that the areas mapped have flooded more than once in a lifetime but

probebly not as often as every ten years. Estimates of the dis-

charges neces'sary to innundate the areas shown on the maps are in

reasonably good agreement 'with bo,th measured and statistically cal-

culated flood 'discharges. The method of mapping past floods pre-

...

sented here has the advantage of being fast and economical.

Signed
Faculty

tl;l C~B

member in charge

of thesis

This abstract is approved as to form and content.

,
