~

Flood of Friday, September 2, 1938
The flood of September 2, 1938 began about 10:30 p.m. and

was caused by cloudbursts in the mountains and foothills west of

Louisville. 28 By slope-area measurements, the Corps estimated the

peak discharge for this flood to be 3,500 cfs, slightly higher
than the one in 1935.29 Eyewitnesses of the flood reported that
the depth of flooding was again about 2~ feet lower than the flood
of 1921.30 Flood damages reported by the Corps were as follows:31

Above Superior

$ 6,820

In Superior

8,770

Superior to Erie

23,390

In Erie

42,890

Below Erie

10,720

Total

$92,590

The office of the State Engineer described the flood of

1938 in the Coal Creek basin as follows:

Coal Creek, which drains the territory adjacent to
South Boulder Creek, experienced a large flood but damage
was confined to bridges and roads. There is little
farming area along the creek after it leaves the canyon
until it descends into the plains area so that the peak
had spread out and slowed down, thus ~assing through the
channel with minor flooding of banks. 2

28U.5.
