sites takes time. Thus, use of the elevation at the top of flood-deposited sediments (new PSIs),
preferably deposits nearest to channel margins, provides a reliable and accurate (+/- 5 percent)
indication of the maximum height of the flood. Hence, PSIs preserved as flood-deposited sediments.
particularly by extreme floods should provide reliable physical evidence to reconstruct the discharge
for the paleofloods. PSI-HWM results from this study are important for water-resources
investigations where flood data are limited, particularly for studies requiring extreme-flood data for
risk-based assessments. Additional research is needed to obtain data in other stream environments, to
assess the long-term preservation potential of PSIs, and the frequency of inundation of these flood
features.
