. ~-.,... - ,....~ :--

draft 3120/98

sites takes time. Thus, use of the elevation at the top of flood-deposited sediments (new PSIs),
preferably deposits nearest to channel margins, provides a reliable and accurate (+/- 5 percent)
indication of the maximum height of the flood. Hence, PSIs preserved as flood-deposited sediments.
particularly by extreme floods should provide reliable physical evidence to reconstruct the discharge
for the paleofloods. PSI-HWM results from this study are important for water-resources
investigations where flood data are limited, particularly for studies requiring extreme-flood data for
risk-based assessments. Additional research is needed to obtain data in other stream environments, to
assess the long-term preservation potential of PSIs, and the frequency of inundation of these flood
features.

Refer,.n..~

Baker, V.R., Kochel, R.C., and Patton, P.C., (eds.), 1988, Flood Geomorphology: New York, John
Wiley, 503 p.
Baker, V.R., 1984, Flood sedimentation in bedrock fluvial systems, in Koster, E.H., and Steel, R.J.,
eds., Sedimentology of Gravels and Conglomerates: Canadian Society of Petroleum, Geologists
Memoir 10, p. 87-98.
Baker, V.R., 1987, Paleoflood hydrology and extraordinary flood events: Journal of Hydrology, v. 6,
no. 1-4, p. 79-99.
Carling, PA, and Grodek, T., 1994, Indirect estimation of ungaged peak discharges in a bedrock
channel with reference to design discharge selection: Hydrologic Processes, v. 8, p. 497-511.
Christensen, R.C., Carlson, D.O., Ashcroft, GL., and Anderson.
