CHAPTER II

THE NIVER CREEK BASIN

The Niver Creek basin is located in the northern part of the Denver metro-
politan area; it extends from Federal Boulevard east to the South Platte River, and
from about 78th Avenue north to 100th Avenue. The major north-south traffic
artery, Interstate Highway 1-25, runs through the heart of the basin. There are
three municipalities, Federal Heights, Thornton, and Adams County, in the basin.
A map of the basin boundaries is shown on Plate 11-1.

Basin Boundaries

,

The basin boundaries on Plate 11-1 show the limits of the Niver Creek
drainage area. These boundaries were taken from the drainage basin descriptions
prepared for Project REUSE by the Denver Regional Counci I of Governments and
the Urban Droinage and Flood Control District. They were verified ond adjusted
slightly after field inspection.

As shown, the basin is composed of the main Niver Creek and two tribu-
taries, designated Tributory M and Tributary L. Tributory M is in the middle of
the basin and runs from Federal Boulevard southeasterly to its confluence with the
main stream of Niver Creek, near 88th Avenue and 1-25. Tributary l is in the
lower part and runs from Federal to about 86th and 1-25, where it joins Niver Creek.

.

:1 '7 '1 .(" ~., 1 ~.''-'
The total drainage basin is about 6.6 sq~~~e miles, with about 3."isquare
,:<,!':-
miles draining into Niver Creek proper, 1.4 square miles in the middle tributary,
') ,,0
ond 1.5 square miles in the lower tributary.

land Use

The area is quite fully-developed, and building construction continues

throughout the basin.
