,

~

r
1
I
I
~
t
~

PREFACE

I
f
,
I
I

The purpose of this report is to present information on the flood
hazard along the Co~orado and Gunnison Rivers in the viainity of Grand
Junction. Mesa County. Co~orado. Residentia~. i7llbmtria~. and agri-
cu~tura~ damage oCCWTed in the study area during floods that oCCWTed
in 1884. 1917. 1921. 1952. and 1957. Studies made for this report show
that floode of the magnitude of other past floods can occur in the
future. aUhough flood contro~ operations of Paonia and Blue Mesa
Reservoirs in the Gunnison River dPainage reduces the flood threat on
the Gunnison River and on the Colorado River dormstream from the mouth
of the Gunnison River. A recurrence of the 1884 flood. the most severe
knol.m. would inundate about the same area on Colorado River upstream
from the mouth of the Gunnison River. and lJOuld be considerably reduced
on the Gunnison River and dolJn8tream Co~orado River areas. This report
contains information on past floods. and maps. profiles. and cross
sections that indicate the appro=imate e:ctent and depth of inundation
from Zarge floods that can reasonably be e:cpected to occur in the
future. For purposes of this report. these floods have been designated
as IntelWlediate Regiona~ and Standard Project Floods.

This report lUaS prepared at the request of the Western Colorado
Regiona~ PZanning Col1r7lission. with the indorsement of the Co~orado Water
Conservation Board. under the continuing authority provided the Corps
of Engineers in Section 206 of the 1960 Flood Control Act (PubLic ln1>>
86-645). as amended. It. is intended that the report be used by the aity
of Grand Junction, Mesa County, and other f~ood plain users in developing
and using flood pZain tU'eas in such a bIay that flood hazards and future
flood damages are minimilled. RecoTmlendations or pZans for the soZution
of flood problems in the study area are not included in this report;

i

r
I
l
,
\

----~--=-=--==---

_J.'>:
