For example, just
below Sunset Drive the width of the main channel at the elevation
where overbank flow will occur is about 110 feet, and the mean depth
is 7.3 feet. At a section 2,400 feet above Sunset Drive, the corres-
ponding dimensions are 450 feet and 14.3 feet.
Gravel is mined extensively from both the main channel and the
flood plains in the upstream part of the area. Except for a few
homesites and one trailer court, the rest of the flood plain is

pasture, cultivated land, or occupied by commercial and industrial

buildings. Occupancy of the flood plain in 1962 is substantially

greater than that shown on plate 2, and there is evidence that the

geometry of the main channel has been altered markedly in some
places after the base map was compiled.
Lefthand Creek
The rate of fall of Lefthand Creek in the study area is about
17 feet per mile. The main channel is straight, deep, and narrow, with
very steep banks. There is little vegetation along the banks. The
flood plain, which is under cultivation, is very flat and wide.
DATA AVAILABLE
Records of streamflow have been collected by the State Engineer
of Colorado and by the U. S. Geological Survey at several places on
the eastern slope of the Front Range and in the Plains region of the
South Platte River basin. Some of these records were not used in

this study because they were too short or because they were collected

it
