The
range of data formats supported is different for different software packages. For example, the GIS software
called Maplnfo can import data from the following formats: AutoCAD DXF/DWG, ESRI Shape file, MIF,
and Intergraph/MicroStation Design.

Part 8: How to create your own data: Digitizing and coding

The most common method of converting paper maps and other graphic data to a digital format is to use a
digitizing tablet. A digitizing tablet consists of a flat surface on which the map or graphic is placed. The user
traces the features of interest with either a pen-like stylus or a flat cursor, The tablet converts the position of
the stylus or cursor into a computer compatible signaL Before tracing the map, the user must identify points
on the map for which real world coordinates are known, Digitizing can also be performed on-screen.
On-screen digitizing is often performed over an aerial photograph or other image, For example, you can
digitize streets from an image and create a new Streets layer.

As data are digitized, each new line, point or polygon is usually automatically assigned a unique internal 10
by the digitizing software, This distinguishes each discrete feature from another but provides no information
useful for a GIS, Additional information must be added by the user. For example, if you digitized the streets,
each street has to be assigned a street name. The procedure of adding information to the features in a data
layer is frequently called "coding".

8of9

3/17/98 10:05 AM
