Baca County

Figure 4.1-6 Road Damage and Field Inundation
Along County Road 39

4.1.8 1997 Flood Damage

The available documentation indicates that damage from the 1997 floods in
Baca County were primarily confined to county roads and bridges.
Information obtained from the County Commissioners' Office (Waite and Self
1998) and the Baca County Road and Bridge Department (1998) provides
some costs associated with these damages. In addition, the FEMA damage
survey reports also provide cost estimates associated with these storm events.
A summary of these damage estimates for Baca County are provided in Table
4.1-6.

j
J

The county road and bridge cost is an accumulated sum of material and
equipment costs associated with damages on specific road sections; no labor
costs are included in this value. The USDA-Farm Services Agency in Baca
County did not indicate that any significant damage to agriculture occurred
as a result of these floods (Lusk 1998); most of the inundation occurred over
natural grasslands.

4.1.9 Flood Hazard Mitigation

The County Commissioners' Office indicated that no formal flood mitigation
efforts were or plan to be implemented as a result of the 1997 storm events

d479jchap4-1.doc 08/13/98

4.1-11
